Winnipeg ready to embrace vodka craze, new bar owners wager

  • October 17, 2014 12:32 AM PDT

A trio of Winnipeg couples are betting they're on the front end of a tren Canada Goose Freestyle Vest d when they open the city's first nightspot with vodka in a starring role. Vodka Rocks will offer 40 brands at its grand opening Oct. 17, and plans to hit the triple digits as it settles into the former Dylan O'Connors space on Pembina Highway near Bishop Grandin Boulevard. "Th Canada Goose 2014 New Parka ere'll be oodles of vodka," co-owner/bartender Scotty Townsend said. "When it comes to vodka, it's the hip thing. Vodka is huge." Through his many visits to Las Vegas, Townsend said he foresaw the coming of whiskey bars and Canada Goose Womens Solaris Parka craft brewpubs to the city. Now it's vodka's turn: Grey Goose has proven immensely popular in North America, and there's been an explosion of flavoured vodkas on the market in recent years. "Vodka's the next one," Townsend believes, recalling a Sin City liquor store the size of a Sobey's with an entire wall devoted to it. "You could get anything from glazed doughnut to double chocolate to buttered popcorn. Everything. There's so much over there, and it's making its way up, and we're going to be the first, the biggest, the best," he said. Unlike whiskey or wine bars, there's no perception of snobbery associated with vodka, and Townsend feels it'll be the same with the clientele, which he, along with wife Lisa and partners Todd and Cher Lindsay, and Al and Colleen Reidke, expect will be in the 25-50-year-old range. "We don't want to be high-end here, and we're also not some cheap place. We want Canada Goose Womens Trillium Parka to be the blue collar people's type of place," he said. And while Townsend admits vodka is their "niche", their intent is to be the "everything place" with plenty of draft on tap, numerous pool tables, three projection screens (including one 20-feet-by-11-feet), lounge and restaurant space, a top chef and DJ and nightclub space with a VIP section. There's room for 350 people inside and 67 more on the patio and if social media is any indication, it'll be a tough ticket this weekend. Townsend and his wife Lisa built a loyal following over nearly 30 combined years behind the bar at the Palomino Club and are also familiar faces from the Rum Hut during Blue Bomber games at Investors Group Field. Of course the stadium and University of Manitoba are a big part of what made the location desirable, as the group preferred it to the "fickle" downtown area. "The growth dynamic of the southern corridor is definitely no secret," offered Noel Bernier, president of FB Hospitality, which expects to roll out the nation's largest selection of craft beer for a "sneak peek" at a new Barley Brothers location on Oct. 25, the date of the Bombers final regular season home game. Barley Brothers Stadium plans to take the lead in Canada's taps race with 156 brews to choose from, and will open for good four days later in the former Earls Pembina space. It'll become their signature location, with room for 240 in the pub/restaurant and 120 more on the patio while featuring a two-storey glass beer cooler. Barley Brothers, the city's first craft brewpub, o Canada Goose Womens Victoria Parka pened on Empress Street last October. Bernier said they also expect locations to hop up in the east part of the city and downtown in the coming years.
